With over 450 participants and volunteers this year’s Beacon of Hope was a meaningful and fun event in support of a great cause – preventing teen suicide. All proceeds from the race support the programs of I Need A Lighthouse, Inc.

The mission of I Need A Lighthouse, Inc. is to significantly reduce the loss and suffering from teen and young adult depression, suicide, and suicidal behavior through educational programs and community partnerships. Beacon of Hope 5k Run/Walk

This race begins at 24th Street Park and follows the board walk along the oceanfront for a beautiful run ending once again at 24th Street Park. The course is scenic and enjoyable for novice and experienced racers.

1 Mile Memory Walk

Those who have been personally touched by suicide and/or depression are invited to join us in a 1 Mile Memory Walk Share with others, and support local efforts to promote education and awareness about teen depression and suicide. Participants are invited to bring a copy of a photo (no originals please) to post on the memory wall at the race.

Family Festival

Bring your family and friends to the oceanfront for the race, and stay for live entertainment by local artist David Cavitt, food, and lots of kid-friendly activities and fun.

Our Mission On July 25, 2001, in the space of a moment, Kathleen Wakefield's life changed forever when a police chaplain knocked on her door and informed her that her 21 year-old son, Jake, had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Jake's suicide gave Kathleen a new life goal, It is my deepest desire to honor Jake's life by educating teens and young adults about depression and suicide. I NEED A LIGHTHOUSE (INAL) was established by Kathleen in 2001 to carry out the following mission: To significantly reduce the loss and suffering from youth depression, suicide and suicidal behavior in communities throughout the region. Share your personal story If you know a loved one who has been affected by depression, when asking for donations, share how depression and suicide affects you and your family's life. If you want to help the cause, explain what motivated you to join the cause. Mention that the Beacon of Hope 5K will benefit individuals in Virginia Beach. Create a fundraising goal The Beacon of Hope 5K is asking participants to raise money from friends, family, coworkers, and companies. Set a high bar! Since we have specific recommendations on how to raise $250, we encourage participant to raise at least $200. You can set the goal higher if you want an even greater challenge.
