Adult Depression

What is Depression? Feeling unhappy or sad in response to disappointment, loss, frustration or a medical condition is normal. Many people use the word “depression” to explain these kinds of feelings, but that is really situational depression, which is a normal reaction to events around us. There’s a vast difference between “feeling depressed” and suffering from clinical depression. The despondency of clinical depression is unrelenting and overwhelming. Some people describe it as “living in a black hole” or having a feeling of impending doom. They can't escape their unhappiness and despair. However, some people with depression don't feel sad at all. Instead, they feel lifeless and empty. In this apathetic state, they are unable to experience pleasure. Even when participating in activities they used to enjoy, they feel as if they're just going through the motions. The signs and symptoms vary from person to person, and they may wax and...

Kathleen Wakefield Founder, Executive Director On July 25, 2001, in the space of a moment, Kathleen Wakefield’s life changed forever. Kathleen’s doorbell rang at midnight. A police Chaplain and police officer informed Kathleen that her 21 year-old son, Jake, had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Jacob was a soft-spoken, handsome young man with a winning smile and a dry sense of humor that drew a large circle of friends. Jake hid his despair from those closest to him. Jake’s death was unfathomable, and totally unnecessary. Jake’s suicide gave Kathleen a new life’s mission, “It is my deepest desire to honor Jake’s life by educating teens and young-adults about depression and suicide.” Kathleen believes depression is treatable and hopes to reduce lives lost to suicide. Using her 30+ years of experience as a teacher in Virginia Beach Public Schools Kathleen created I NEED A LIGHTHOUSE. Inc.,...

Suicide Prevention

If You Feel You May Be at Risk for Suicide If you are considering harming yourself, it is imperative that you seek help immediately. Turning to a family member, friend, or mental health professional can provide immediate support and keep you physically safe. If you are unable to seek help from someone you know, you can find assistance through the support and crisis lines listed below. REMEMBER: There is ALWAYS another solution, even if you can’t see it right now. Emotions and situations change. Do not be ashamed. Many people have experienced what you are going through. Depression can make you feel emotions and act in ways that do not fit with your usual personality. Wait 24 hours before you take any negative action because this can give you time to think things through and find other options. Try to talk to someone, anyone - as long as they are not another suicidal or depressed person. If you’re afraid you can’t control yourself, make sure...

Lighthouse Psychology Club

I Need a Lighthouse, Inc. was founded with the mission of significantly reducing the loss and suffering from teen and young adult depression, suicide, and suicidal behavior in the South Hampton Roads area. We are proud to partner with NAMI to reach into local High Schools to establish an ongoing educational presence through the Lighthouse Psychology Club.

Lighthouse Psychology Clubs meet monthly and address topics such as:
• Opportunities in various Mental Health Professions
• Current issues debated in the field of Mental Health

• Stigma and education around Mental Health/Mental Illness, including how mental illness is portrayed in the media

The first club was founded at Cox High School in 2008. In 2009 we are thrilled to be forming clubs at Kellam High School, First Colonial High School, Kempsville High School and Bayside High School.
Depression and Senior Adults

Signs and symptoms of depression in the elderly Older adults don't always fit the typical picture of depression. Many depressed seniors don’t claim to feel sad at all. They may complain, instead, of low motivation, a lack of energy, or physical problems. In fact, physical complaints, such as arthritis pain or headaches that have gotten worse, are often the predominant symptom of depression in the elderly. Older adults with depression are also more likely to show symptoms of anxiety or irritability. They may constantly wring their hands, pace around the room, or fret obsessively about money, their health, or the state of the world. Signs and Symptoms of Depression in Older Adults • Sadness • Fatigue • Abandoning or losing interest in hobbies or other pleasurable pastimes • Social withdrawal and isolation (reluctance to be with friends, engage in activities, or leave home) • Weight loss; loss of appetite • Sleep disturbances (difficulty falling asleep or staying...

Defining the Problem

Suicide Affects Thousands Each year in the United States, more that 30,000 lives are cut short by suicide. That means that suicide ends one life every 17 minutes. For every life lost, thousands more are affected by the loss of a child, parent, friend or co-worker. It is a silent epidemic that takes more lives than AIDS or homicide and is vastly underreported by the media. For every HIV/AIDS attributed death, there are two deaths due to suicide. For every two homicides in the US, there are three deaths by suicide. When measuring the impact of suicide, we must also account for the lives affected by suicide attempts. 1,500 Americans attempt suicide every day (one attempt every minute) For every suicide death there are 22 emergency room visits and 5 hospitalizations. Suicide Affects the Young Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for young people (ages 10-24). According to National Institute of Mental Health, more teenagers and young adults die from suicide...
